Shoulder Flexibility Issues
September 30th, 2008If you are at a corporate job, a job that you sit for long hours or just watch Prison Break, 24 and god knows what else all day long; your shoulders are probably hurting halfway through your game. If you are sitting for long hours, your posture takes a severe hit which promotes slouching and an arched back. If you don’t believe me, look at many of the seniors. The longer you sit in the same position and if you do it on a daily basis, you are begging for pain and discomfort.
If you want to prevent shoulder pain from happening which I HIGHLY recommend, is that you do the following exercise: Shrugs.
If you don’t know what shrugs are, we are going to clearly explain it but if you do know what shrugs are, you may have not understood the concept the first time around or this may have a different spin on it from the version you know.
Here is the step-by-step procedure to do shrugs:
1) Sit comfortably, away from the back rest in an erect position.
2) Pull your shoulders up straight to your ears
a. Try to use the shoulders specifically and try to reach as close to your ears as possible.
3) Release the shoulders forward and bring them back to rest position.
The whole motion should be 2-3 seconds which allows the proper use of the shoulders which tackles the knots in your neck and relieves the tension from your shoulders.
Another quick stretch for your shoulders:
1) Take your right hand across your body and place your hand on your back as if you are scratching your back.
2) Use your left hand to try to pull the right elbow comfortably as far as it can go.
a. Note: The point is not to hurt you but to FEEL the stretch.
3) Repeat this on the left shoulder.
As you read more and more articles on golf flexibility, you understand the importance of flexibility and mobility in your body not to just beat your buddies or show off. Flexibility works wonders for your health. Remember one thing: You can go through my blog, others’ blogs, YouTube Videos, etc. But if you don’t take action and actually start doing these stretches, you aren’t going to become flexible. Take these exercises, write them down and use them during your breaks at work, at home or whenever you have the time.
